WHO IS DOCTOR MUM FOR KIDS?

Hej hej, I am Emma, a British qualified paediatrician registered with the licensing board to practice here in Denmark. A mother of two living in Copenhagen, I moved here when heavily pregnancy with my first daughter so I understand the unique challenges faced by families adapting to a new culture, healthcare system, and environment. This experience has shaped my approach to first aid education. My aim is to make my courses accessible, straightforward, and sensitive to the needs of expatriate families.

Through Doctor Mum, I hope to empower parents and caregivers with the confidence and knowledge to respond effectively in emergencies, manage common childhood injuries, and create safer environments for their children.

BEHIND THE NAME, AND THE WOMAN

The name Doctor Mum for Kids was born on a playground in Copenhagen. When a child grazed their knee, my daughter proudly announced

“It’s okay! My mum is a Doctor Mum for Kids!”

The other parents and I had just been discussing the idea of combining my background as a paediatrician with first aid education for families…..and in that moment, the name clicked. It perfectly captures what I hoped to offer: expert, practical care delivered with warmth, community, and the perspective of both a doctor and a mum finding her own place in Denmark.

    After graduating from medicine at the University of Cambridge my training continued through nearly a decade of clinical practice, culminating in paediatric specialisation and Royal College of Paediatrician membership in 2018. Working with international NGOs naturally lead to a Master’s in Public Health, so you can be sure I always bring evidence-based first aid expertise to my teaching and resources.

    As a parent of two, I know first hand the urgency and worry that comes with a child’s injury or illness, and the importance of clear, calm guidance. We’ve had our fair share of scrapes and accidents to contend with and I’m also a NICU mama so I truely understand what it feels like when things don’t go to plan.

    EXPATRIATE

    I’m a ‘third culture kid’ myself now raising third culture kids of my own. Having navigated life as an immigrant in Copenhagen, I am deeply aware of the cultural and language barriers that can make accessing health information, appropriate care and a sense of community more difficult. If the first aid courses offered can bridge that gap in some small way then that’s my definition of success.

    EDUCATOR

    Teaching has been a constant throughout a medical career, from clinical skills training for nurses, midwives and medical students in hospitals to academic tutoring at the University of Edinburgh. Formal instructor training with the UK Resuscitation Council is combined with emergency paediatric response expertise to design and deliver every course. I love breaking down first aid knowledge into simple, practical steps and connecting with students whilst watching them master a technique or concept.
